Set Product SKU Limit per Return Request

Plans: All plans Platforms: All platforms

Overview

As a merchant, you can activate the product limit feature, which allows you to regulate how shoppers select returnable products within a single return request. Depending on your infrastructure configuration, you can restrict it to one SKU per return request or ensure that only products meeting the same return routing rule conditions are submitted together in one request. This functionality enables you to establish routing rules that ensure accurate product handling across various return methods.

Product SKU limit based product SKU limit and return routing rules can be easily configured under Eligibility rules in AfterShip Returns admin.

Product SKU limit setup

Go to Eligibility rules under Returns policy in the AfterShip Returns admin
Move down to the Product SKU limit section. You can limit product returns within a single request based on two conditions

1. Limit to one product SKU, with no product quantity limit/product quantity limit to one

This option determines whether multiple product SKUs per return request are permitted. If a customer has bought various products (SKUs) in a single order—let's say, three different types of outfits in multiple quantities like 3 white dresses, 2 black dresses, and 1 black shirt—you can control whether:

All products (SKUs) can be returned within the same return request, or only one product (SKU) per return request can be processed.

To set this up, follow these steps:

In Eligibility rules, switch the toggle to enable Limit product per return request in Product SKU limit.
Choose No limit on product quantity to allow all product variants per product SKU to be returned in one return request.

All product variants (quantities) can be returned within the same return request, or only one variant (quantity) per return request can be processed.

To configure this, follow these steps:

In Eligibility rules, switch the toggle to enable Limit product per return request in Product SKU limit.
Select Limit product quantity to one to permit only one product variant per product SKU to be returned in one return request.

Customer experience

Based on the above settings for Product SKU limit, two scenarios can occur if Limit to one product SKU, with no product quantity limit/product quantity limit to one is selected

Scenario 1: If Limit to one product SKU per return request and No limit on product quantity is enabled, the customer can return, say, all the 3 (product quantity) brown vases (SKU) in one request.

But if they go on to select the 2nd product SKU say a multicolor vase, they won’t be able to do so because of the one product SKU per return request rule.

Limit to one product SKU, with no product quantity limit

Scenario 2: If Limit to one product SKU per return request and Limit product quantity to one is enabled, the customer can return 1 unit (product quantity) of a brown vase (SKU) in one request.

But suppose they go on to increase the number of units of a brown vase. In that case, they won’t be able to do so, nor will they be able to add another SKU to the return request because of the limit to product SKU and quantity that can be returned to 1 per RMA.

2. Limiting to products meeting the same routing rule conditions

This option allows only product SKUs that meet identical routing rule conditions to be included in the same return request.

For instance, if a customer buys multiple products (SKUs) in one order—let's say, 1 green smart watch, 1 black smart watch, and 1 black pair of polarized sunglasses—and the merchant configures return routing rules routing watches and sunglasses to different return locations, only the green and black watch would be permitted to be submitted together in one return request since they are returning to the same location/warehouse. The black polarised sunglasses would need to be returned separately because it’s going back to a different return location.

To implement this, follow these steps:

Configure return routing rules with SKU, Product tag, or Product type as conditions to specify how various products should be routed to their respective return locations.

To ensure the product limit feature effectively separates products during item selection, routing rule conditions must be mutually exclusive. In this scenario:

Routing Rule 1 should incorporate the condition: product tag = Smart watch
Routing Rule 2 should incorporate the condition: product tag = Polarized glasses

In Eligibility rules, activate the toggle for Limit product per return request in Product SKU limit.
Choose Limit to products meeting the same routing rule conditions.

This product limit option will solely consider the product information conditions outlined in the routing rules. Items not meeting any product information conditions will still be selectable by the customer along with other items when submitting a return request.

Customer experience

If Limiting to products meeting the same routing rule conditions is selected, this is how the return request submission flow would be

When the option to limit products meeting the same routing rule conditions is enabled and the routing rule is configured to route products with tags glasses and watches to separate return locations, the customer can initiate a return for, let's say, the green and the black watch in a single request. However, they will be prompted to submit a separate request for the black polarised sunglasses (gif:AfterShip Returns Admin).

Shopify (eCommerce platform settings)

AfterShip Returns Admin

Once a return request for the green and black watch is submitted since they are routed to a same return location, you can proceed to submit a separate return request for the black polarised sunglasses (gif:Return request submission for black polarised sunglasses).

RMA for green and black smart watch

Return request submission for black polarised sunglasses

Separate RMA for black polarised sunglasses

Use case for dropshipping merchants

In scenarios where customers order multiple items, fulfilled by various vendors from different locations, dropshipping merchants need a method to route products back to their respective vendors' locations upon return requests.

With this feature, merchants can establish return routing rules based on product type conditions and configure vendors' locations in the shipping information under the Ship with a return label return method.

You can configure vendors' locations under Returns shipping in the AfterShip Returns admin.

When the product limit by the same routing rule conditions is enabled, customers will be prompted to include only the items routed to the same return locations in a single request. For any remaining items, a separate request must be submitted.
